Being able to make inferences is an important skill that helps us understand our reading. Knowing what a text is talking about even though it may not be explicit can be tricky for children. We used Luke Davies’ poem, Childhood Terror to help us with our inference skills. You can read the poem by clicking onto this link:
After reading and discussing the poem, the boys took some lines of the poem and illustrated them to show their understanding. You can see some of their work below.
After that, we read Magpie, where the poem is turned into a picture book. To everyone’s surprise, in the book it isn’t a child and his father, it’s a puppy and his father.
