We watched the following video of Mr Archimedes Bath by Pamela Allen.
Then we discussed displacement – what happens to the water level when something is placed into water? What happens to the water when we hop in the bath? Then it was time to experiment.
We used water in cups and placed marbles, magnets or rocks into them. Then we took notice of where the water level moved to. Once we’d done that, we marked the water level after we’d placed a rock into the water. Then we took the rock out and used marbles to work out the volume of the rock. We kept dropping the marbles in until the water reached the same level as it had when the rock was in there, then we counted our marbles. That was the rock’s volume.
