Tree

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We have spent some time this week working on activities based on Tree (a little story about big things), the wonderful picture book written by Danny Parker and illustrated by Matt Ottley.  Tree is the story of a tree, from sapling to a mature tree.  Within the illustrations are other lifecycles – a family of mice, and a father and his son.  We see these families change over time with the tree.

We started our exploration of Tree with questions, one of the skills that good readers use.  The children completed doors to understanding – writing questions while listening to the story, then after a second story telling, writing answers to their questions (if they were answered in the text).

Tree has many  beautiful words that really helped us visualise what was happening in the story – once we understood what they meant.  We talked about the meaning of many of the words, then worked with a partner to match the words to their meanings.  Now we are going to try and use some of these words in our own writing.

Today we made advertising posters, to convince people to visit the park that Tree is in.  We had to use many persuasive techniques – repetition, colour, a sense of urgency, rhetorical questions, appealing to emotion and others.  The Champs did a great job!

What was your favourite part of Tree?

Can you write a sentence using one of the new words from Tree?
