Part, Part, Whole Butterflies

We have a class full of butterflies at the moment – fact family butterflies.  The Champs have been learning about the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.  That’s a bit of a mouthful, although some of the Champs are doing really well at remembering the phrase, “inverse relationship”.  Perhaps easier for them to remember is part, part, whole or fact families.

Within a fact family, there are 4 number sentences – 2 addition and 2 subtraction.  In an addition number sentence, the whole number is always at the end.  In subtraction number sentences, the whole number is always at the beginning.  You can see the fact families we came up with on our butterflies below.

Can you come up with another fact family?
