Straw Gliders – a language experience activity

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Language experience is a process in which an experience is provided for the children and then they write a recount about that experience – so much more interesting that writing about their weekend, at least for many of them.

This morning, the Year 2 Champs made straw gliders and then flew them outside.  Here is the recount that Lehan wrote:

Today LA4 made straw gliders.  We made different colours of them.  Some are pink, some are blue.

First Mrs W gave the instructions and we listened to the instructions.

Next we made the straw gliders.  It was fun to make them.  We made them from straws and paper.

Then we played with them.  We loved this part.

I think my straw glider flew very well.  I flew very high and I loved it!

Watch the short video below to see us at work.

Later in the day, we used the gliders again for a problem solving challenge.  Using the problem solving wheel (pictured below), the children had to try and come up with a glider that would go even further than their initial ones.  They decided that the strategies to use were Guess and Check, and Build a Model.  Some children came up with some amazing designs and some of these did fly further!

What part of these activities did you enjoy the most?

Can you name the parts that belong in the orientation (beginning) of a recount?
